  • Part 1 in this module will provide an overview of deaf-blindness, a description of various life experiences of individuals with varying degrees of hearing & vision loss and share potential cultural affiliations based on etiology.

    Part II will describe potential risks for deaf-blindness and strategies to identify hearing and vision loss.
  • This module will cover a wide range of information on communication modalities used by learners who are deaf-blind, communication techniques and assessment strategies.

    For ease of access, the content has been broken into four parts:
    Part 1 - What is Communication?
    Part 2 - Communication Modes
    Part 3 - Communication Strategies
    Part 4 - Assessing Communication Skills
    • This module will focus on appropriate instructional strategies for learners with hearing and vision loss. Different theoretical approaches and techniques will be shared.
    • This module will provide an overview of Orientation & Mobility as well as specific guiding techniques used with travelers who are deaf-blind. Strategies for all levels of travelers will be shared.
    • This module describes the concepts driving the philosophical planning approach called Person Centered Planning. Planning tools referred to 'maps' will be described. The conceptual framework as well as samples of various planning maps will be shared.
    • This module shares the components on how to lead a self-determined life, particularly for young adults with combined hearing and vision loss. An intensive Self-Determination Activity Plan illustrates these concepts in daily practice.
    • This module will focus on best practices on transition planning for young adults who are deaf-blind, with a strong emphasis on transdisciplinary teaming. There will be discussion around collaboration between educational team members and adult service agencies that will assist in a smooth transition from school to adult life.
    • This module will describe adapted physical activity and adapted physical education for children with dual sensory loss. Examples that illustrate various activities, communication techniques, adaptive equipment and suggested modifications will be described.
